Apprentices in the Rising Moon Midwifery Group
We at Rising Moon feel that it is important for skills to be passed from experienced midwives to those seeking to learn the craft of midwifery. It is due to this apprenticeship model that holistic midwifery is alive today. We benefit in our modern practice from generations behind us from many cultures that have taken the time to teach other midwives. The apprentices assisting within the Rising Moon Group have comprehensive backgrounds in many aspects of midwifery and the care of women and newborns. The roles they serve are both to assist your primary midwife in all aspects of your care and, when appropriate, take the role of primary under supervision.
Kate was trained through the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) PEP CPM process. This requires an extensive knowledge base that is then applied within the apprenticeship training under supervising midwives. The apprentice must attend prenatal and postpartum appointments and participate in many out-of-hospital births. This is one of the unique aspects of this training; CPMs (Certified Professional Midwives) are experts in the care of women in home settings. After fulfilling the general education requirements, observation by her preceptor that she is competent in all areas deemed necessary in the practice of homebirth midwifery, apprentices then take a four hour skills assessment exam and an eight hour written exam. Upon satisfactory completion of these bench marks and exams, she is granted the title of CPM. Currently 25 states in the USA recognize the CPM as an accreditation and as such will grant licensure to CPMs to work as midwives in their state. For more information about CPMs, the PEP process of accreditation, national statistics and more visit www.narm.org or www.cfmidwifery.org.
Midwifery apprentices are members of the team of care providers available to you during your prenatal and birth experience with the Rising Moon practice. Midwifery apprentices are women experienced with many facets of prenatal, labor, birth and postpartum care and will at times have direct contact with you for your patient care. Our current apprentice is Janet Cappetta. We have known her since 1998. She is a Certified Doula of ten years, Certified Childbirth Educator, was active in LLL when her children were young, was a member of the local ICAN board in NY, and started the first ICAN chapter in the state of NJ. She lives in Marlton, NJ. She has a son who is 15 years old and a daughter who is 13 years old. Janet is a HBAC (Home Birth After Cesarean) mother.
She is enrolled in AAMI, and will graduate September, 2010. She plans to take the NARM exam to be a CPM at that time. She will be working with RMM as an apprentice. She began to attend births with Kate in January 2008. She looks forward to meeting you during your prenatal time with us, becoming part of our community and learning from the RM midwives.
